Early History
The Iroquois Indians used the Corinth area for camping, hunting,
and fishing. In the 1770s the Jessup Brothers (Edward & Ebenezer)
became the first lumbermen in the area. Their logs were floated down
the Hudson, Schroon, and Sacandaga Rivers and landed at the bend in
the Hudson just above the falls at the present site of the Corinth
Free Library. This earned the area the name of Jessup's Landing for
many years. The area became known as Corinth in 1818 when the Town
of Corinth was formed. The Village of Corinth was incorporated in
1886.
The ready power supplied by the great falls at Corinth was a magnet
for entrepreneurs. Several mills and factories used the falls for
power in the early years of the town. 1869 saw the beginning of the
paper industry in Corinth with the opening of the Hudson River Pulp
and Paper Company. In 1898 this mill joined with several other mills
to become the International Paper Company. The Hudson River Mill ceased operation in 2002
ending the era of papermaking in Corinth.

Corinth Today
Many citizens work in smaller
businesses in the community, while many others commute to jobs in
nearby cities such as Glens Falls, Saratoga, and Lake George.
Corinth has a lovely beach next to the library. A public walkway
follows the Hudson River from the beach to Pagenstecher Park, which
is located on the palisades just beneath the falls. The views along
the walkway are stunning and afford ample opportunity to view
wildlife such as Canada geese, muskrats, and many species of ducks.
